How does the American progressive left achieve its goals? It acquires authority seeking policy aims that breakdown and reconfigure the bonds of solidarity that keep man free.
How do they achieve this objective? By appealing to abstractions regarding human freedom and identity, they destroy the moral foundations that underwrite the American experiment in liberty. They seek policies that weaken the social, monetary and fiscal bonds that sustain freedom, and in so doing destroy the American Revolution as enunciated in the Declaration and ratified in our Constitution.
The tools at their disposal are primarily ideological: inflation, currency depreciation, confiscatory taxation, and a pernicious regulatory state. Through these policy measures, and sentimental appeals to utopian abstractions of identity, freedom, justice, and equality, the contemporary American progressive left seeks to destroy the gift of self-government in its entirety.
We must understand that any threat embodying tyranny will come from inside the house of liberty itself. This is a new phase in a very long conflict, one that not even our Founders nor Lincoln envisioned.
The American experiment in self-government is threatened from inside the very bonds that procure and sustain the most enduring social capital: private property, conjugal relations, the family, profit, individual responsibility and conscience, just to name a few.
Conservatism after Reagan is a counterrevolutionary movement that must reconcile itself to defend the natural bonds that procure and sustain the twin achievements of modernity: namely the Judeo-Christian concept of individual sovereignty and liberty. In so doing, the very Republic our Founders envisioned would serve to emulate the standard for the rest of humanity.
The conflict burning through Muslim civilization has identical sources to the conflict burning through the west, a battle waged between two irreconcilable political traditions which embody antithetical expressions of human freedom. The battleground is the future of liberty itself, hanging in the balance is the scope of self-government and the expressed character of human identity and liberty.
