Two Iraqi Kurdish parties, the Movement for Change and the Kurdistan Islamic Group, on Monday called on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to postpone its planned Sept. 25 referendum on independence. "We call for the postponement of the referendum process to a more appropriate time and to be legislated by the Kurdistan Regional Parliament," the two groups said in a joint statement, stressing "the need to hold elections on time." The KRG is under increasing pressure from Baghdad, Turkey, Iran and the United States to call off the non-binding poll, which critics say would exacerbate ethnic divisions just as the Islamic State is on the back foot.
